Lacrosse in the Bluff City, From my Perspective
As a native of Michigan (Go Lions!) who spent most of my career stationed in Hampton Roads, Virginia where girls' field hockey is the undeniable queen of sports, it's been nothing short of amazing to watch lacrosse grow here in Memphis. Yesterday, the lower schools wrapped up their season on the stunning St. Mary's field, and what a sight it was! Standing at the top of the steps, looking out over the sea of young athletes, I couldn’t help but feel a spark of excitement. The energy in the air was contagious: sounds of cheers, slap of the sticks, the rush of the game—it was electric. Memphis is brimming with some seriously talented athletes, and I am beyond thankful to be here to witness this rise of lacrosse in this city. It’s truly a moment to remember.
Where We’ve Been This Week
Collierville High School vs. Evangelical Christian School
Eagles Fly high- ECS Soars Past Collierville to Victory
On Tuesday we headed to Collierville to watch the Dragons take on the Eagles. The game started fast, with ECS coming out aggressive on offense and netting several quick goals to set the tone. By the end of the first quarter, the Eagles had jumped out to an 8-3 lead over the Dragons and never looked back.
Collierville fought hard throughout, showing grit and flashes of strong play, but ECS simply had too much firepower. The Eagles controlled possessions and consistently found open lanes to the cage.
ECS standout, Casey Vargo, was nothing short of electric. Her stick skills were on full display, slicing through the Dragons’ defense with speed and precision. Every time she touched the ball, the energy shifted — her performance kept K and I on the edge of our seats all evening.
But it wasn’t just the offense that shined. Their defense was sharp and disciplined, applying relentless pressure and forcing key turnovers that shut down several promising Collierville possessions. Their communication and positioning kept the Dragons from ever finding a consistent rhythm.
ECS has a wealth of talented young players who are already making an impact. Coach Pickle is creating a solid foundation and with their depth across the roster, I predict the Eagles will be one of Memphis's top teams in the years to come.
Players of the Game- ECS #9 Casey Vargo. & #21 Molly Pearson.
St. Mary’s Episcopal School vs. Hutchison School
Shelby League Championship
St. Mary’s Defets Hutchison 17-3 to Win Middle School Shelby League Championship
St. Mary’s claimed the Shelby League Championship in impressive fashion, defeating Hutchison 17-3 on Thursday. From the opening whistle, St. Mary’s took control, jumping out to a commanding lead. Their offense was fast and efficient, with multiple players contributing to the scoreline, while their defense kept Hutchison from finding any footing.
Hutchison played with detrmination and spirit, never losing pride in the game but just couldn’t keep pace with St. Mary’s overwhelming attack.
With this dominant win, St. Mary’s solidified their status as the top school in Memphis lacrosse this year, and with such talent across the board, they look set to remain at the top for years to come.
